How to Care for Natural Fabrics: Making Your Rugs, Tablewares and Linens Last a Lifetime

In a world of fast fashion and disposable decor, choosing natural materials like muslin, jute, and sateen is a commitment to quality. You’ve invested in pieces that look beautiful, feel incredible, and are kind to the planet.

But unlike synthetic fabrics that are practically indestructible (and uncomfortable), natural fibers are "living" materials. They react to water, heat, and sunlight.

The good news? Caring for them isn't difficult—it just requires a slightly gentler touch. With the right care, your House of Bengal pieces won't just last; they will get softer and more beautiful with age.

Here is your complete guide to caring for your natural home textiles.

1. Caring for Muslin Bedding

Our Muslin Duvet Sets are loved for that signature "crinkled" texture and cloud-like softness. Here is how to keep them feeling dreamy.

  • The Wash: Always machine wash on a gentle cycle using cool or warm water (maximum 40°C). High heat can break down the natural cotton fibers over time.

  • The Detergent: Use a mild, liquid detergent. Avoid bleach or detergents with optical brighteners, as these can strip the natural color—especially on our Dusty Blue and Warm Grey sets.

  • Drying (The Secret to the Crinkle): To maintain that effortless, textured look, we recommend air drying or tumble drying on the lowest heat setting. Remove the bedding while it’s still slightly damp and shake it out.

  • Ironing: Good news—you don’t have to! Ironing flattens the signature texture of muslin. If you prefer a smoother look, a quick steam is all you need.

2. Maintaining Jute Rugs & Baskets

Jute is incredibly durable, making our Lahara and Rajbari rugs perfect for living areas. However, as a natural plant fiber, it doesn't like getting soaked.

  • Regular Cleaning: Vacuum your jute rug regularly to prevent dirt from settling into the deep weave. Pro Tip: If possible, turn the beater bar off on your vacuum and use suction only to avoid pulling at the natural fibers.

  • Spills: Accidents happen. If you spill liquid, do not rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fiber. Instead, blot firmly with a clean, white cloth until the moisture is absorbed.

  • Rotation: Natural fibers can fade if exposed to direct, harsh sunlight for years. Rotate your rug every 6 months to ensure even wear and color retention.

3. Refreshing Your Tableware

Our Malai and Kendra placemats are designed to protect your table, but how do you protect them?

  • Spot Clean Only: These handwoven items should generally not go in the washing machine.

  • The Method: For food stains, use a soft bristled brush (like an old toothbrush) with a little water and mild soap. Gently scrub the spot and let it air dry completely before stacking them away.

4. Storage: Let Them Breathe

Whether it's your winter duvet cover or your extra guest sheets, storage matters.

Avoid storing your natural linens in plastic bins or bags. Plastic traps moisture and can lead to yellowing or mildew. Instead, store your Luxury Bedding Bundles in a cool, dry cupboard, ideally inside a cotton storage bag or a pillowcase. This allows the fabric to breathe even when packed away.
